24 school runs

Oh, we're already Wednesday and I totally forgot to sum up last week, which marked 2/3rds done! Man it's going far too fast now!! Only 24 more school runs to go!

We are really cramming in so much in each day and each weekend, that every week feels like two!
I can't believe it was only last week Lucas was away on his three-day school trip to Miri; and I went to the dentist and to the doctor to have another vaccination shot. Plus the busy weekend I've already written about, it was really needed to have an extra day off.

Now it's getting down to the last, very last few jobs to do. I'm kind of over it, but need to gear up I guess. Nearly there.

Halfway week

So another week has been and gone in our big countdown. This week we passed the halfway mark, which means that in exactly four weeks time we should be touching down in Abu Dhabi - roaring to start our new adventure! (I say should be, all travel arrangements are still not finalized, so watch this space...)

This week was a rather big week, you see I have been up in Abu Dhabi, and the kids have been on a four day sleepover with the Turners.
But before that, there was also time for dentist appointments for the kids, Valentines Day hashing for me on Tuesday and a couple of lunch dates and the other normal activities.

Of course the kids still went to school Thursday and Friday, as usual. On Thursday Lucas took part in the Junior Sports League competitions in the afternoon, and played both football and t-ball. On Friday the Prep School had their Sports Day, and both kids were now out on the field participating in proper events.

I heard from several of my friends during the morning how well they were doing, and Tash also snapped some photos for us to enjoy.

Yellow house won - again!

On the Saturday Linnea and Ben had a Minecraft birthday party to go to, which seemed to have been  a success.

It was two very tired children that came and picked me up from the airport last night after a busy weekend with their friends. They were both really happy to see me. Lucas said he had been a bit homesick - and didn't want me to go away that long again...

What I was up to in Abu Dhabi, will come in another post.

The fourth week

I have an app on my phone that gives me daily, weekly and monthly horoscopes. On Monday it told me that I would suffer some technical issues this week... Great.
Well, Tuesday morning we came out to this when we were supposed to go to school in the morning:

No panic though, we were really early, so all I had to do was call Nicole, and she took the kids to school for me. Had she already left there's another neighbour also going to school, or Anna, Tash and Pip all pass my house as well.
Then I called the 24/7 crew, who came and changed the tyre for me:

Luckily I had no plans Tuesday morning, I could carefully drive the car on the spare tyre down to the tyre shop, to have them fix my tyre for me again (it had a huge nail in it!), mount it back on the car and store the spare tyre away under it. They had raised their price since last time I was there. It only cost me $3 last time, and now I had to pay FIVE dollars! Ha ha!

Then my Amah's alarm didn't wake her on Wednesday so she slept in... No big deal there either, I can still figure out what goes in the lunch boxes and get everyone ready!
Finally the other day my kettle packed up! So I guess I've had my fair share of technical malfunctions this week, I hope next week will be better!

Otherwise I've kept clearing out, and preparing for the packers. I think I'm really, really close now to having only things that will come in the house, or either be donated or thrown away in the end. Some more furniture went this week, so now it looks really empty in some corners of the house:

I also jumped on my neighbour's garage sale this morning, and sold a few more weird and wonderful things I have no more use for:

We managed to spend a few hours at the Yacht Club finally yesterday, and realized they are building a brand new car park outside, which will be really good once it's done!

Apart from that, we've been to a CNY party and a BBQ this week; I've celebrated Anna's birthday and hashed; AND I managed to close our post box, forward our mail, plan and execute Lucas' birthday party and get the some last vaccinations we were missing.
The days roll by quicker and quicker, so Jay and I truly enjoy our quiet nights together in front of the TV, when it's peaceful enough to try and catch up with everything going on, also in my mind...

Girls morning

Saturday morning while the boys were left in peace to play Xbox, the Turner girls and the Watson girls went to get pampered at the salon! We all had our hair washed, massaged and blow dried and came away with super nice hair dos for the weekend ahead!

Linnea's hair is quite long now. When they blow dry it super straight like this, you can see it's all the way down to her shoulder blades. She looked really pretty.

Hannah got pretty curls done in hers.

Me and my girl.

Rain rain go away

It's been a week since my last post about the current weather situation, and it has basically been raining non-stop since. Today it actually hasn't stopped AT ALL! It's been raining now, without letting up at all, for about 24 hours!
It's crazy, it's all everyone is talking about. The weather. The rain. The cold...

I don't mind either much. I rather enjoy the lower temperatures and getting to wear some different clothes to normal. I do mind all the problems that come with the heavy rains though, the power cuts, the floods, the car accidents along the roads... I feel like it's enough now, we need to dry out for a little bit. Please could we have some sunshine now, even if it's just for a few days!

One done, eight to go

So, one week done. Eight to go...
I'm a little bit worried as to what the rest of our time here has in store for us, as this week certainly has been slightly challenging for this temporarily single Mum already.

We had three power cuts over two nights. Not so much fun spending two evenings, all by yourself, in a total blackout. Luckily the kids could fall asleep anyway, and the bonus for me was that I had to go to bed early since there wasn't much else to do - so I got some much needed extra sleep.

Our kids are very rarely sick. They've actually had terms with 0% absence from school! Although every now and then, things happen... This week Linnea had a close encounter with a wall one morning. She was playing "it" before school, and got pushed head first into a wall = scrapes all over her face, shoulder, arm and knee... :(

I got the call from the school nurse already at 08.03, so back I had to go to school to get her again. Little one, it really doesn't look very nice.

Apart from these happenings slightly out of the ordinary, it has been a rather normal week. Hash, tidying up, work, selling stuff, school, kids birthday parties, sleepovers, Yacht Club, and a lot of driving around as usual.
Bring on the next one.

A busy Sunday

Well, actually it has been a really busy weekend! Not only did we go to the Masked Ball on Friday night, but before that Lucas had a birthday pool party and Linnea and I went on a play date.
Saturday there was sleepovers going on, at the same time as the continuous clear out process taking place every free hour at the moment: sorting, clearing, selling, chucking... *Sigh*.

This morning Linnea was down at the 'Saap Stadium' for a sporty birthday party. It was Gemma who hosted a cool and active party for her 8th birthday. They had played table tennis, had a chocolate eating (!) competition, played football and much much more.
Linnea had been the captain of the Silver Ferns, and they had won a few medals! Very cool theme!

In the afternoon we all went to see the "Little shop of horrors", performed by the Secondary Students at JIS. I wasn't very familiar with this musical, so it was fun to see something new. They all did very well, it was a lovely performance.

And now tonight after dinner, I made an attempt at a new recipe of 'lussebullar', traditional Christmas buns with saffron. My Amah's comment when she saw me getting started says it all:
-"Mam, what are you trying to do??"
Well, although they came out tasting alright, I don't think I can serve them up at tomorrow morning's Christmas coffee, as they are not very pretty... ha ha! I certainly am no star at baking, I should stick to my 'kladdkaka' and 'chokladbollar' - I do those really well!
But, I got to use my old Electrolux, that used to be my Grandma's - it's from the 1950s!! It's always a pleasure to give that a spin!

You know it'll be a good week

It must be a good week, when it starts with a smashing Monday night at the Yacht Club - with good food, great friends and dancing the night away to the U.S 7th Fleet Band, the Orient Express!

We've seen these guys before, when we went to the impressive Brunei Tattoo a couple of years back, and they were great then so I knew I wanted to go and see them last night. They've apparently been coming to Brunei ever since the 1980s.
The U.S. 7th Fleet Band was created in 1943 with the establishment of the United States 7th Fleet. Comprised of professional Navy Musicians, 7th Fleet Band is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and embarked on board the United States 7th Fleet flagship, USS Blue Ridge.
You can see some more photos from this Brunei visit, on their Facebook page, here.

The ensemble that performed for us this time (they had also been giving a lunchtime concert at school earlier yesterday, which the kids had enjoyed!) was a six-piece group that played very funky music that made us all dance all night!
In the middle of it all it hit me how lucky we are - get to dance to a live band, enjoy yummy food, in a club next to the beach and the sea in a tropical country, on a Monday, in November! People pay big money to travel far away to enjoy just this, and it's our life!

Now recharge for the next big celebration this week - tonight's Founders Day!

Swosch!

I must admit I wasn't really looking forward to these two weeks of school holiday. Already after the first three days I had about had enough of the quibbling and arguing..!
But, then came Singapore, and Singapore always delivers! It was such a nice break, it was well needed to get away for all of us I think. We did some cool things together as a family and it was fantastic to spend time with Misuzu and her family, and getting some retail therapy done too!

Even though we had nearly a whole week left when we came back, it has swosched by!
I actually don't feel ready to go back to the early mornings, school runs and what have you already on Monday! (Normally you'd see me doing the happy dance across the parking lot!)
I've so enjoyed my long sleep-ins, not having many plans, hanging about at home not doing much, spending time together and taking the day as it comes. I'm not done! (Especially not since we now have eight long weeks until the Christmas holidays...)

Ah well, for now, I'll take my sore Lego-fingers (we're in the middle of a big tidy-up right now!) and go make another cup of coffee to enjoy the rest of my afternoon with. We still have one more day!

Finally Jackiefied

The Blonde is back!
It had been 8 weeks since last time, yuk. For the first time my hair and the way it looked in the end, was really bothering me this last week before my hair appointment tonight.

But now it's back to normal, it's all good again - I feel great, yay!

Jacky, my hairdresser, flies in from Singapore every 6-8 weeks, to do hair here. You'll know when she's in town, because all the girls look so fab all of a sudden - we've all been "Jackiefied"!

Superduper SupaSave

While down in Seria the other day, we also went to visit their new SupaSave supermarket. Well, it opened in December last year, so it's not totally new, but it sure seems really new and modern, compared to our two branches here in Bandar... Oh, how I wish we had one of these SupaSaves up here... oaaahhh...

It was big, with wide aisles, lots of stock, different things to here, nice and fresh produce, an appetizing meat counter, a dairy counter three times the size of our one and - it was super clean and designed a lot more logically than our ones.

We managed to fill a trolley, even though we didn't really "need" anything! But they had so many things that have been out of stock up here for ages, so we took the opportunity to fill up our cupboards with favourite staples!

Little things that make me happy

For my birthday in January a friend send me a gorgeous arrangement of flowers, and I kept the card to try and find that flower shop again when I'd have an occasion to buy some more flowers.
Yesterday I wanted a table decoration for the lunch I was hosting, and set out to try and find the shop. It wasn't easy as it was very small but after some direction from my friend, I got there.
All I can say is - OAW!

It was such an amazing florist! They had so many different kinds of exotic, beautiful flowers that I was totally taken back! I got this arrangement for my table, isn't it pretty?

I think I'm going to start buying fresh flowers a lot more often, it really makes me so happy!

Hazardous haze

This is how the sun looked this morning at the school run - slightly hazy here at the moment!

They predict that this haze may persist for several days, and I do feel for those with asthma issues etc.

The reason for this haze over Brunei, is apparently trans boundary haze from local burning in West Kalimantan and parts of Sarawak. The PSI (=Pollutant Standard Index) reading in Brunei is a lot higher than normal, today it's at 51, which is considered moderate. The conditions over Singapore and southern Malaysia is way more alarming though, Singapore had an all-time high of 371 the other day!

A man of few words

I bought a new handbag when we were in Hong Kong but unfortunately the handle broke only the second time I used it and it's been laying around since then waiting for me to get it fixed. It was an easy fix though, it had just sort of let go in the seam that held it to the bag. Finally this week I got around to taking it to the shoe/bag repair man, and managed to get a park right outside his shop.
He must have seen me arrive, bag in hand, because before I even got to say good morning, the following conversation happened:

- Can.
- Ehm... ok, you can fix this...
- Yes.
- Great! Can you also...
- Can also.
- ... ehm, I mean... enforce the other ha...
- Yes. Can!
- Ok then...
- Today?
- Well yes, that would be great.
- Today. Can.
- Thank you.

Ha ha, only in Brunei! The cost of him fixing the handle and enforcing the other three seams too?
$3, which is about €1,80, 16SEK or £1.60! Bargain

Some pics from this week

As I said in my previous post, this week has been a "normal" week with all the usual happenings.
At CrossFit we have got a new toy - a big, BIG tyre!
So we have been working on tyre flipping..! Yeah, makes you feel really strong!

Can you tell we were all girls at the Box this specific day...?

It's been great to be back to the Zumba Studio too, I've missed my trusty Zumba freaks!
The other day one of the girls had a birthday so her friends brought her cake.

At the Hash on Tuesday we honoured one of our members who sadly passed away in an accident four years ago, it was the 'Roadrunner Memorial Run'. Quite an emotional shout-up, a couple of poems were read out, we had a silent minute and we shared some memories of her with all newer hashers that didn't know her. It was a lovely evening.

And as every year at this run, we enjoyed Lee's favourite treat meal: fish & chips from the Kasbah! Mmm!

Back to reality

It's Monday, and this particular Monday has hit me rather hard. I just came back from Hong Kong last night (Nathan is still there, returning tonight); where we had a lovely long weekend together - without the children..!

I returned to two happy kids who couldn't wait for me to get out of the car even, before:
"-Hi Mummy, do you have any presents for us?!"
And a few moments later, still only just inside the door, I got:
-"You know Mummy, Daddy has hidden our iPads, and we can't find them. Do you know where they are?"
So good to be back, and having been so missed. Or something... ;)

I didn't get to spend much time with them before it was already time for bed, and this morning we were straight back into school morning frenzy. Lots of different things needed for the day ahead.
Today both kids have library and need to bring in their weekly homework; Lucas has Speed Stacking and swimming - and Linnea needed her dance kit for the Showcase rehearsals. I think we remembered it all!

Weekend fail

This weekend was another extra long weekend. Since it was the Brunei National Day on Saturday we had an extra day off school today, in lieu.

Nathan and I are off to Hong Kong next weekend for a wedding, so I had planned some sunning time this weekend - but that turned into a total fail...

Both Friday, yesterday and today have been overcast and rainy. Actually only Saturday was a sunny day but then of course our schedule was full with other things preventing me from getting to my sunbed at the Yacht Club...
Arrrghhh! Where's the sun when you need it??!

Win-win-win

I got a total energy boost the other day and decided that it was time to sort out all those stored away clothes that were falling out of the cupboards where I kept them.
I had kept hold of them because I was planning host do another "Bring-and-Buy sale" at some stage, but in the end... it all felt like too much hassle. All of a sudden I just wanted to get rid of all these things we were never going to use again.

My oh my, it was SO much..!
I had shelves and shelves of stuff that the kids had outgrown, but also things that Nathan and I won't use or don't fit anymore. (Mostly because it's too big ;)..!)

So, today I took it all down to the Berakas Camp. The Loan Service Team has a thrift shop there where they sell the things on, cheap, cheap - and then they use the money they get to do good deeds in the community.
It's kind of a win-win-win situation: people can come to the shop and buy nice things very cheap, the money goes towards charity AND - I get it out of my house! Win, win, win!

Week 2

We have finished week 2 of Term 2, a term luckily shorter than Term 1, it's only 10 weeks until the next big holidays.

It's pretty much business as usual around here. The After-School-Activities aren't kicking in next week, but homework already has been sent home for both kids.
We have a new rule, nothing else happens - until homework is done! So far, so good:

Linnea is doing Fun Drawing for ASA this term, and Gymnastics! I failed to sign her up for Gymnastics last term so the pressure was on - and as it sold out in 23 seconds (!) we felt very lucky she got in!
Lucas wanted to continue his Football and Tennis but unfortunately they'd canceled Tennis this term, so instead he is going to join Chess! He's pretty excited about that actually. He is also going to participate in the Junior School production 'Africa Rock', scheduled to be performed in May.

It looks like it's going to be another busy term. For now I feel super organized and on top of things. For now..! :)
